Ibo Island, in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of northern Mozambique, was once a trade hub for the Portuguese and Omani Arabs. Now many of its centuriesold buildings sit in ruin, but the 17th-century star-shaped Fort of São João is well preserved and plays host to the island’s silversmith collective. These men produce unique jewelry using ancient Arab techniques. This old man was placing intricate details on a foursome of fish before firing them. The late-afternoon light that came into the workshop reflected off the tiny bits of metal like actual fish scales. Click to hear Cristina Mittermeier’s comments on why this photo was a winner.

Into The Light

The sun was just rising over Scottsdale when I arrived at the ranch. The horses had been moved from their barn into the arena and were beginning their day with a run into the “angel rays” that had broken through the clouds. The moment couldn’t have been more exhilarating, but the RAW capture was somewhat flat. The image was manipulated with 14 different layers. Once the color image was perfected, I made a black-and-white layer, then brushed it away with a 50% airbrush. Click to hear Andy Katz’s comments on why this photo was a winner.
