Where are you based?
Portland, Oregon

When did you take the photograph?
June 6, 2012

What about this place is special for you?
I find the Palouse to be most intriguing since photographically it represents a wonderful blend of the natural rolling hills sculpted over time and the careful manicured fields of the farmers. From the top of Steptoe Butte, when the light is right, the emerging patterns are marvelous.

What equipment did you use?
Nikon D300S, Nikkor 18-200mm zoom, Tiffen circular polarizer, Gitzo tripod with Arca-Swiss head.

Please describe how you got this photo.
I had always wanted to photograph the Palouse, but finally got around to doing it in June of last year. This photo was taken in the early evening of our first day of the trip. We drove up to Steptoe Butte and found ourselves to be the only ones on the site. This is quite the opposite to many other iconic photographic venues that I have visited in the past, where traffic police might have proved useful to monitor the competing photographers.

Did you use any special techniques?
I photographed this scene from many angles with a variety of focal lengths, but found this one to have the most pleasing composition and leading lines.
